Speaker 1:Hello, my friends, and welcome to episode number 81 of the One Girl Travel Podcast. Today I'm going to share with you my first ever virgin voyage experience. So I love cruising. I have been cruising for wow, let's say 11 years now and I have been on this was my 13th cruise. I love cruising. I think it's such a great way to experience the world, especially the solo travel, but you get to see so much and you get to experience the ship. It's so much fun, and this is my first Virgin Voyage experience. So I am going to share my experience with you today. But first I have a reminder for you.
Speaker 1:On Thursday, august 1st, at 7 pm Eastern Time, is my Make the World your Playground Masterclass. So if you're listening to this before that date, it is not too late to register. I highly recommend that you register, even if you cannot attend live. There will be a 24-hour replay, but for those who register, they are going to get something very special from me in their emails, so you do not want to miss out on that. You can click the link in show notes and get on the list. I would love to see you at the Masterclass Live. If not, watch the replay. That's cool too. But let's get ready to make the world our playground, and I certainly made the world my playground while on this Virgin Voyage ship. So, if you're not familiar with Virgin Voyages, it is the first ever adults-only cruise, so this was a huge attraction for me, adults-only. I personally don't have children, so when I'm on vacation I prefer not to have kids, you know, splashing and running around, but to each their own. I love the fact that Virgin does 18 and older, so that was my first incentive for going on a Virgin Voyage cruise.
Speaker 1:Second was the fact that a marketing company I follow was hosting a content creator conference on board a Virgin Voyage ship, and they brought in some phenomenal speakers for this conference. We had Michael Moretti, who is an incredible photographer, who I've personally been following for years. So once I saw his name pop up, I'm like, okay, I'm in, I need to learn from this man. And then we had Monet. She's the traveling child on Instagram. She is a travel influencer and just gave us such amazing information about the travel industry, about being a travel influencer. And then we had Sandy and Jimmy from Trying Something New on YouTube. They are an RV Life family. They are just the coolest people and so sweet. So those were our three speakers we had and it was just phenomenal. The experience was great. I came out with so much information that I am very excited to implement and you shall all see that. So, besides the actual conference, I want to talk to you about Valiant Lady.
Speaker 1:That was a cruise ship I was on from Virgin Voyages and my personal experience being on an adults only cruise for the very first time as a pretty avid cruiser, right. So the cruise was for five days. It left out of Miami and we went to Costa Maya, mexico, and Bimini Beach in Bahamas, mexico, and Bimini Beach in Bahamas. In Costa Maya, we did this incredible private tour Private. So, side note, if you do private excursions, make sure you're back to the boat on time. The boat will not wait for you. But I digress. So we did a private tour with this company they are called Eco Experience and we did a private catamaran tour through Costa Maya, through this beautiful, gorgeous turquoise water, and on the catamaran they would stop let us go for a swim in the water. They were making us fresh guacamole, they had mangoes and pineapple and cocktails. It was so much fun and a lot of us went on that tour as a group and it was great. We got all the content photo shoots, swimming. It was so much fun. I do highly recommend this tour company. Again, it's Eco Experience. After our catamaran tour concluded, we went back to their private restaurant. They served us fresh tacos and delicious food. It was wonderful.
Speaker 1:I've also been to Costa Maya once before and I did an excursion. Again, it was a private excursion. It's with Maya Chan Beach Resort, so this is an all-inclusive beach resort, just for those who are on a cruise and are spending the day at the destination, and this place was amazing. You go and you get a little like beach setup with chairs, a hammock, you get fresh tacos, guacamole cocktails. It was a great experience. Unfortunately, they were closed due to hurricane season when I was there, but I would absolutely recommend Mayan Chan Beach Resort also if you're going to Costa Maya. We're a really unique experience. And when we went to Bimini in the Bahamas I have never been to Bimini before. I've been to Bahamas before, but Bimini was so beautiful. You take a shuttle and you can go to the Virgin Voyages Beach Club, which I did go to eventually.
Speaker 1:But first I did something I never planned on ever doing, but I saw that Michael Moretti was signed up for this excursion and, again, he is an incredible photographer so I'm like I need to be where he is. I want to learn from him. So I did a stingray excursion. This was so cool. They put us on a boat. We went to this remote Island and there were wild stingrays. They would just feed them and they would come out and they were stingrays everywhere and these stingrays, like they would swim right up to you. They're bumping into us. Not going to lie, I was a little nervous at first but I got over it. Like they were just so. They were just swimming all around us and it was really cool. And I think my favorite part was Michael already had his housing for his camera, this waterproof housing that takes photos from under the water and above the water. It's like half in, half out and he did our photos for us and I'm very excited to get those. I saw the images on his camera and they were phenomenal. I think he took 11,000 photos that day. He's insane, he's so talented. But that was such a cool excursion.
Speaker 1:And then after that, we went to the beach club and now Virgin Voyages. Beach Club is massive. You walk in and you don't know where to look. First, there's two giant pools. There's like the party pool and the sporty pool. There's bars. There's a restaurant, the food and the non-alcoholic like standard drinks, like water, soda, those are all included. And then the bar. You just pay whatever you purchase and then they had, you know, cabanas for rent. There's chairs everywhere. They had a DJ playing. They had this beautiful, beautiful beach, huge beach, a ton of chairs.
Speaker 1:I just spent the whole time in the ocean, like I didn't even go in the pool. I'm like I have a pool at home. I want to be in this gorgeous, crystal clear water and the water was just like phenomenal, so nice. And at this beach club. You want to get there around 1 PM. Well, you want to be there for 1 PM because at 1 PM the DJ is going to play, the dancers are going to come out and they're going to bring out like 100 floaties, like these big floaties that you can play on, and it is a huge pool party. If that is something that you're interested in, you don't want to miss it. It looked like a very fun time. I personally just wanted to be in the ocean, but I did stop to take some pictures and videos of the pool party, but it's a total vibe. That's the great thing about Virgin Voyages Like they are a vibe and I'm going to talk more about that.
Speaker 1:But those excursions were great for a five-day cruise. I personally think five-day cruises are a little fast for me. I prefer seven days just to have that fun and then that downtime also. Plus, I was on this cruise for a conference, so a lot of the time was spent with planned activities or the conference itself. It's so funny because we would break for lunch and we're in our business casual clothes, that we're going, our business casual clothes, that we're going out to the pool deck and I see all these people in their bathing suits in the pool having drinks, dancing. I'm like, oh my God, I've heard God like I'm on a cruise, like people are having vacation and I'm in these meetings. But I wouldn't have changed it. I love the meetings, but I would like to go on another Virgin Voyage cruise to experience the actual vacation vibes of the cruise itself.
Speaker 1:But now I want to talk to you about what I loved about Virgin Voyages, because there was a lot that I truly loved. As somebody that is very loyal to Norwegian Cruise Line, this was a big deal for me because I've only been on one other cruise ship. I've been on Disney Cruise Line to surprise my sister and her family last year. So this was a big deal to go on an adult-only cruise with Virgin Voyages. But let's talk about what I loved with Virgin Voyages.
Speaker 1:First of all, the rooms. The rooms were so cool. They're very tech-friendly. There's this tablet that controls the lights, the shades, the temperature, the TV, all the things. But the coolest feature on this tablet were these presets, and one of the presets is let's get it on and you click it and this music like this sexy music starts playing and the blinds close and this like pink glow light comes on, like throughout the room. It's very funny. I liked it. And then there was like the um, the selfie setting, where the windows, the shades would open and the lights would come on so you get good lighting for your pictures. They had a workout one where like gets you pumped up for the day to go work out, very like they just thought of everything, and I think that was such a cool touch that they did that, especially since this is like an adult's playground, like we're all adults but we're having fun. So that was a very cool feature, something else that I loved that no other cruise line that I'm aware of does on Virgin Voyages they put a carafe of water in your room, complimentary, and they refill it.
Speaker 1:So on every cruise line that I've been on, water is not complimentary. You can go to a bar or you can go to the fountain and get water, but water bottles are a premium. So the fact that they put water in your room is huge, because I don't know about you, but I wake up thirsty. I need water before I go to bed, like I need my comfort water with me at all times. So it was so nice that they would put this carafe of water in your room Complimentary. You don't have to worry about getting water. That was just like a huge bonus for me.
Speaker 1:The next thing is that is super unique to Virgin Voyages is the fact that they put a hammock on every balcony. So if you're staying in a veranda room or a balcony room, you will have this hammock, and it is the greatest thing that I could ever hope for on a cruise Just sitting in this hammock on your balcony looking at the water, looking at the sunset. It was magical. I wanted to spend a lot more time in that hammock, but it is such a great feature, so I do recommend getting a balcony room just for the hammock alone. Well worth it. Other than those features, the room itself was pretty standard. They didn't have anything super out of the ordinary.
Speaker 1:The unique thing with Virgin Voyages is the bed setup. If you are traveling with a friend where you do not want to share the bed, like have the beds together, what they do is there'll be one single bed going one direction and then the other bed will swing to the side, so it's like an L-shaped setup. So that's very unique. I've never seen that before. They did that because originally they were going to transform the beds into couches during the day. They really don't do that anymore. I'm sure you can ask them to set it up that way if you really wanted, but I can imagine that being a pain in the neck for everybody. So if you are sharing a room, just know the beds will not be parallel to each other. They will be in an L shape, so you're either going head to head or feet to head, whatever your preference is. With that, the bathrooms were small, as cruise bathrooms tend to be. There was plenty of closet space for me as one person and of course, I always ask for extra hangers when I'm cruising, because I have a lot of stuff that I hang up and if you ask a room attendant for extra hangers, they will usually bring it to you no problem.
Speaker 1:So another thing I loved about Virgin Voyages was their themed parties. They are known for their parties and they party hard. So Scarlet Night is the biggest party throughout the duration of the cruise. Scarlet Night is when everybody dresses in red. There are multiple events throughout the evening, but the big event is the pool party. The pool party doesn't take place until 10, 30 or 11 o'clock at night, so all these parties started very late, so just keep that in mind. You might need a nap before you go out and party.
Speaker 1:I struggled to get to some of these parties because I was wiped out, but you do not want to miss the Scarlet Night Party. You go by the pool and they are dancing all around the pool and then they will invite you to come dance with them in the pool. So the Virgin Voyage pool setup is two shallow platforms and then the actual pool itself in the center, so you can dance on the shallow platform If you're wearing a long dress or pants, they're going to get wet, but it was so fun just dancing with everybody in this pool with great music. We had the best time. I was ready to throw my skirt in the garbage afterwards because it was just totally drenched, but it was well worth it. It was such a good party. And then there's an after party after that. If you can hang that late, I personally did not I was exhausted, but it is so much fun.
Speaker 1:They also have a PJ party the first night where you wear your pajamas. They have a disco themed party. They have all these themed parties. So I highly recommend you embrace the themes. You dress up, but you don't have to. You don't have to do anything, but it is encouraged to participate and have fun and let loose. So I really enjoy dressing up for these parties.
Speaker 1:And then they also have the most incredible vibes on Virgin Voyages. I was touching on this earlier. The vibes on Virgin Voyages is basically come as you are, we accept you for you, show up however you want to show up. There is no judgment. It's just this be free, have fun sort of vibe, and I absolutely love that. I want everyone to feel comfortable as they are as they should, without any judgment, and just have fun, let loose. This is vacation, it's a good time, so the vibes are just everything on this cruise. I do recommend showing up with an open mind. If you are new to the Virgin Voyage experience, the shows that they have are very unique, very more mature for mature audiences. Come with an open mind, appreciate the shows for what they are. They might not make sense, but they're still very talented. The talent on board phenomenal. They put on great shows, funny, very entertaining. So there are shows every night that I did attend and they were all wonderful.
Speaker 1:The thing I love about Virgin also is how there is like no set standard of travelers on this cruise. There were all ages, there were all body types and no, this is not a swingers cruise. Like, do whatever you want, that's fine. But like a lot of the comments I received when I was saying I was on board was like, oh, is everybody hooking up with everyone? No, it's not like that, it's just an adult theme, like an adult cruise. You can do whatever you want. Again, no judgment. But that is not what Virgin Voyages is about. Virgin Voyages is just about having a good time, having fun and just enjoying life. So don't worry about that. And again, you can participate in as little or as much as you want. There is no set itinerary for anybody. They have plenty to do, so you will find what speaks to you on board to have the most authentic time for yourself. But also, I recommend putting yourself out there trying new things, because there's so much to do.
Speaker 1:Another thing that Virgin Voyages does very well is their food. So they have all specialty restaurants On Norwegian. They have the standard restaurants and then you have an upcharge for specialty restaurants. Virgin just does specialty only with very like complex menus, foodie-oriented menus. You're not getting basic food, you're getting more of an elevated experience. They had restaurants like Korean Barbecue, where they're cooking the food right on the grill at the table while you're playing drinking games, which was very fun, very unique. We were just laughing the whole time. It was so much fun.
Speaker 1:They have a chef's tasting menu restaurant where you can be there for three hours going through the menu and trying all of these foods. They have steakhouses, they have Mexican, then they have Razzle Dazzle. That is more of a vegan-focused restaurant, but they do have the naughtier items on there. Just be prepared to expand your palate, try new things. If you want basic food, they do have not a buffet but a food court, which is really cool. So the food court has all of these little kiosks that you can go to and some will have burgers, some will have tacos, wings, sushi, whatever you want. They had it all and you just go up and order. Or you can sit at a table and flip the little flag saying you want to order and a waiter or waitress will come to you and place your order. They also had an option for to-go food. So the sushi salads you can just take it to go and be on your way. So the sushi salads you can just take it to go and be on your way. So that was a really cool feature.
Speaker 1:All the food I had was very good. They also have the pizza place, which you can go and get a made-for-you pizza right in front of you. That is a late night spot, I believe. They're open until 2 am so you can get that late night pizza. They do give you a buzzer, so you can take that buzzer and go anywhere on the cruise ship and it will buzz you once your pizza is ready, so you don't have to wait around for it.
Speaker 1:And something cool that was on my sailing was Asian Night Market. So they had this special event with an Asian Night Market where the whole food court area was just Asian food from all over the Asian countries. Like they had everything there and you can get noodles, you can get bao buns, you can get dumplings, like everything was there. It was very cool. You can get skewers and you just go around kiosk to kiosk, get your food and and experience all these amazing Asian delicacies. The food again, I thought was very good.
Speaker 1:I personally do like Norwegian Cruise Lines specialty restaurants more. Again, I do pay extra to dine at those specialty restaurants, but those restaurants were like quality restaurant food. On Virgin Voyages it's complimentary restaurant food, so like there is this level of quality I guess. So I would prefer to spend more and get a little higher quality dining experience. But the food was very good, especially since you do not have to pay extra for it. Very good I'm a little spoiled being a New Yorker. Very good food here. So I just my personal preference is the Norwegian Cruise Line specialty restaurant dining over the complimentary Virgin Voyages dining. Just my opinion. I'd love to hear yours on that.
Speaker 1:Next up. Virgin Voyages does fun Like they are the fun ship. They you will make the world your playground when you were on a Virgin Voyage ship. They have pools, they have hot tubs, they have karaoke rooms where you can go rent out a karaoke room and have fun with your friends and sing your heart out. They had this VHS retro workout, which was so fun. We did it as a part of our conference, so we had a private workout. We all showed up in neon and spandex. The outfits were just amazing and we had shake weights and we did. It was a real workout too, mind you. It was just so fun, like getting into the character and just having fun with all these people I just met and we got content, of course, while we're doing this workout, because how could you not? It was fantastic, but it was amazing. They also have different events throughout the day and there's also a spa. I personally did not get to the spa, but a lot of the people I traveled with did and they loved it. It looks amazing. Definitely want to check that out the next time I cruise on Virgin. But overall, I had an amazing experience on Virgin Voyages. I look forward to trying them out again for a full vacation experience, not the conference slash vacation experience, because I want to see what they're all about during the day. I want to get that full vibe.
Speaker 1:One thing to mention also with Virgin Voyages, even though they're about fun and all of that, the thing they do not have, which I find shocking actually they don't have a beverage package. So on Norwegian Cruise Line they have a beverage package and it's usually included. It's very rare that you have to purchase a beverage package nowadays. Usually it's promo, but you can always upgrade to a premium beverage package, but still beverage package. You don't have to pay for drinks. On Virgin you have to pay for your drinks. So I did have a complimentary bar tab from the conference and then I'll share the other thing with you, but I had a bar tab. I ended up leaving money on my tab because I did not really party for this cruise. I just found it interesting that it is a party ship for the most part and there's no beverage package. The drinks were moderately priced. They were not crazy.
Speaker 1:One of the things I really loved that was very unique for Virgin Voyages is the shake for champagne feature. So you want to make sure you download the Virgin Voyage app before you get on the ship, but within that app, when you're on your cruise, you can shake the app and this gold bubble image is going to pop up and then you're going to press a button and you are going to have a bottle of Moet champagne delivered to your room or wherever you are on the ship. And that was such a cool feature. It cost $105. It was well worth it, because I was trying to spend my bar tab anyway, but it was just a really cool touch that they did that, so I did enjoy that. You can bring two bottles of wine with you on board as well, so that was a nice feature. I gave my room steward a bottle of wine because I didn't end up drinking it. This was not really a party experience for me, so I left that on board. But you can bring two bottles of wine or champagne on board. No liquor you can't bring liquor on board, but that's a nice touch considering that there is no beverage package.
Speaker 1:My final note I want to mention is if you have sailed on other cruise lines and you have status on other cruise lines, virgin Voyages will match your status. So I learned this by researching it. I am a platinum member on Norwegian Cruise Line, so I submitted my match request through Virgin and they matched me. They gave me their blue extra I believe that's the name of it where I show that I have status on Virgin, and so they gave me $100 bar tab, which was great. So I had additional money on my bar tab. They gave me free complimentary specialty coffee once a day. It was a very nice touch.
Speaker 1:And then they also gave me one free bag of laundry. Now, this was the first time I ever did laundry on a cruise ship and I will never go back. This is the best thing ever. Like pay attention, because if you get complimentary laundry, definitely take advantage of it, but even if you don't, it's still worth it. So I got a free bag of laundry. This bag is big. I was able to fit all the clothes I wore the entire cruise in this bag. I waited until the final day. We disembarked on Saturday, so on I'm sorry, we disembarked on Friday, so on Thursday I submitted my bag. I paid an extra $20 for expedited service to make sure I got my bag before the end of the day, and I went home with all clean clothes. I did not have to do any laundry when I returned home. It was the greatest thing ever and I want to do that forever now. So I never took advantage of laundry service on a cruise ship before, but it is a game changer. Highly recommend doing it. It's wonderful.
Speaker 1:And then, of course, if you haven't heard, there was a global security outage on the day I returned back from my cruise. So that was a whole nother experience. I'll just touch on that quickly to give you a heads up if something like that ever happens to you. I woke up and my flight was already canceled. I had a 1230 PM flight and it was like 7 AM and it was canceled. I'm like what is happening right now. So obviously I found out that there was an outage and airlines all over the world were canceling their flights. So I got rebooked on an 8.30 pm flight, which, unfortunately, I had my day planned out, where I was flying home at 12.30, landing at 3.30, going to a Foo Fighter concert at 5.30. Obviously, that did not work out. I missed the concert, but whatever, I ended up getting home.
Speaker 1:So the thing that really was a game changer that day was the fact that I use this website called Dayuse. Dayuse is a hotel booking site where you can book a hotel for the day. So I found a hotel near the airport where I was able to book from 10 am until 5 pm. It cost me around $125. It was a Homewood Suites. This was just a lifesaver, because I would have had to spend from 10 am until, let's say, 6.30 pm at the airport. That's a long day to spend in the airport. Even if I have lounge access, I still would not want to be stuck in a lounge for all that time. It's way too long and I had a lot of luggage with me, so it's not like I could just leave it somewhere and walk around.
Speaker 1:Before I used day use, I even asked the cruise line if I can stay on board. Fun fact, you cannot book a cruise last minute. You need at least 24 hours notice. So I was not able to stay on board because I would have stayed on for another week. No problem. But I luckily found day use and I had that hotel room and it was the best thing ever. I was able to take a nap, I ordered Uber Eats, I was able to shower and just relax until it was time for me to go to the airport, and then they gave me a free shuttle to the airport. It was wonderful. It made a stressful day very relaxing and easy. Restful day, very relaxing and easy, and you can use day use. If you have a you know, a late flight or something happens or you just want to spend the day somewhere. You can use day use and book hotels with like cool pools or like unique places or beach access, so you can really use that to your advantage to extend your trip as well. So I will post a link to day use in the show notes as well so you can check it out for yourself.
Speaker 1:Overall, like I said, I would definitely cruise on Virgin Voyages again. I had a lot of fun and I do recommend checking it out. At least try cruising. Cruising is so much fun. If you have any reservations about cruising, reach out to me. Let's talk about it, because unless you get extremely seasick, that's the only way I could see you not wanting to go on a cruise. Otherwise, you're good. These cruise ships are massive. They have everything you can possibly want. They are so much fun. So I personally I recommend cruising to everybody, but you do you, okay? So I hope you enjoyed this episode. I will be sharing a vlog about my trip in the future, so stay tuned for that. Be sure to follow me on YouTube.
